Art Directing the second annual Fall Fashion section was, without a doubt, my favorite project as a Wednesday Journal designer. Through four on-location photo shoots we were able to truly capture the community and its businesses, with special thanks going to our 14 volunteer models. I loved working with an amazing team starting with planning meetings in June and going all the way through to putting the finishing touches on the page layout in September. It was the perfect way to end my time as a designer at WJ.

While a friend of mine was working as an Americorps VISTA member I collaborated with her to create some promotional work for various projects she was working on. These are small works that were mostly only used for a season at a time, but it was great to see groups like Americorps doing work on such a close community level.

I started working at the BG News as a reporter during the first week of my freshman year of college. After taking on a beat of my own and a variety of reporting assignments, I ventured into photography and finally design. The BG News was a great opportunity for me to learn each aspect of the newsroom and I believe my designs reflect an understanding and respect of the other branches.

Working at Wednesday Journal Inc meant I had the opportunity to work on three city papers and three suburban papers, spanning a variety of topics and readership. I was responsible for putting together a newspaper cover-to-cover on a morning deadline but also had the luxury of time with weeklies to work with editors to create some strong feature sections.

In addition to working on the weeklies, I have art directed some of our special sections, like Fall Fashion,Summer Fun, the Mother's Day Holiday Guide and HomeBook.

As an editorial designer at Wednesday Journal Inc, I spent half of my time working on the Chicago Parent, a monthly magazine with supplements Chicago Parent Going Places, Chicago Special Parent and Chicago Baby.

I've taken covers from start to finish, beginning with team brainstorming to create a concept, to art directing the photo shoot to brainstorming cover headlines and laying out the final product.

I also lead the redesign of our Going Places magazine which we launched in Fall 2012 (first two slides below). We swapped out some of the typefaces and colors in favor of ones that were consistent with the Chicago Parent brand. I also simplified each section opener for a clean, cohesive look. Overall, the magazine is fresher than before, with more prominent white space but the color-coded sections still remain for easy navigation for our readers.

I've always loved this quote by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia. After watching "180° South" for the first time in May 2011, I was once again inspired by Yvon's life and work. To me, this is such a simple statement but a wonderful one to live by. We can talk as much as we want about conservation or change or our favorite non-profits but if we aren't getting our hands dirty and actually doing something to create the change we want to see, we're basically useless.

I spent three weeks working with The Samburu Project in Wamba, Kenya. As expected, it was an incredible experience but when I returned home I knew that my involvement with TSP wasn't over. In just under three months, I organized a fundraiser for TSP in Chicago and designed all the materials to go along with it.

When a group from DePaul's MBA group returned from New Orleans this winter, they contacted me about working with them to host a fundraiser here in Chicago for the St. Bernard Project, who they had worked with while in the Big Easy. As someone who considers New Orleans their second home, I agreed right away. We worked together to create an identity for the fundraiser that spanned web and print in order to promote the event, but also make sure the night left a lasting impression on attendees.
