WAC Magazine
Below are a selection of my favorite WAC Magazine covers. I’ve taken them from concept to print, even digging out that journalism degree to help with some headline copy along the way.
I’ve been contributing to WAC Magazine since 2018, and began leading design in 2021. During that time, we’ve shifted from bi-monthly to quarterly, which has brought along a series of opportunities and challenges. Additionally, at the WAC, the tradition is to only feature people on the cover once a year: when a new Chairman of the Board is elected. Which means we get pretty creative for all the other covers.

Suzana doesn’t tone down her love of florals and bright colors just because she’s the first female CEO at the WAC. For this cover, we really leaned into that.

Chairman Roger Wylie has a lot of hobbies, but beekeeper was the one that really made him light up. There was no question we’d be featuring him in a bee suit, instead of a blue suit, on the cover.

We commissioned local baker and artist Jasmin Bell Smith to create these wintery cookies for this cover. Seeing our historic building on a cookie was a real treat.

The challenge with this cover was to tease the “How-To” stories without showing any of the people behind them. We posed it to read as a CYOA… which item will you choose?

Just as this issue hit stands, we opened a golf simulator on the 8th floor. This cover made for a great behind-the-scenes video and promo for the new amenity.

The idea for this cover came from me having an incredible popsicle at the Farmer’s Market, and deciding the WAC should have a summer partnership with Seattle Pops. We got a great cover and a lot of sweet treats out of it.

During 2020 and 2021, I recieved so much mail from friends and family. Those heartfelt notes inspired this holiday cover. To make it extra special, we held an employee handwriting contest instead of selecting a handwritten font.
Behind the Cover
Suzana Sakay is the first woman in the WAC’s 95-year history, and the eighth person overall, to hold the top executive position.
For her story, I really wanted to lean into who Suzana is as a person. She’s cheerful and optimistic, loves florals, her family, and the color purple. She is incredibly driven, believes in getting things done instead of putting them off, and holds the Club to high standards. Suzana does not tone it down or apologize for who she is.
Seeing this bright pink cover on tables and stands around the club not only represents her personality, it represents her leadership style and the future of the Club.
